What is your horse drinking from?
The container your horse drinks from is just as important as the water source.
Some materials can leach harmful chemicals or heavy metals, especially when exposed to heat, sunlight, or acidic water.
Old or damaged containers can also trap bacteria, algae, or residues, affecting water quality and your horse’s health.
Common containers that can pose risks include:
1. Low-grade plastic buckets and troughs – may leach BPA, phthalates, and other chemicals, especially in hot weather. Cheap plastics degrade, crack, and harbour bacteria.
2. Old or damaged plastic containers – worn surfaces trap algae and bacteria. Broken pieces can chip off and be ingested.
3. Galvanised metal containers – zinc can leach, especially with acidic water or salt. Rust can also contaminate water.
4. Lead-soldered or old metal tanks – older tanks or pipes may leach lead.
5. Painted containers – paint flakes can contaminate water and may contain toxins.
6. Fibreglass containers not designed for water – can release resins or chemicals if not food-grade.
7. Containers previously used for chemicals or fuel – residues from herbicides, pesticides, oils, or fuels can be extremely dangerous.
8. Rubber containers of unknown origin – recycled rubber can release toxic compounds, heavy metals, or oils.
9. Concrete troughs without proper curing – fresh concrete can leach lime, making water alkaline and unpalatable.
Inspect buckets and troughs regularly for cracks, sharp edges, or contamination, and avoid repurposed containers not designed for water storage.
Using food-grade, purpose-built containers and cleaning them often is a simple but crucial step to protect your horse’s health and ensure constant access to safe, palatable water.
