How much water do horses need?

On average, an adult horse should drink 25-50 litres (7-13 gallons) per day.

The exact amount depends on several factors:

  • Body weight: naturally larger horses drink more than ponies.
  • Diet: horses on dry hay or high-fibre feeds need more water than those on pasture, which is 60–80% water.
  • Medication and supplements: some can increase urination or affect water retention, meaning losses must be replaced.
  • Workload: exercise and sweating raise water requirements.
  • Weather: hot or humid conditions can double water intake.
  • Life stage: lactating mares and growing foals have higher needs.
A hard working horse in hot weather may drink 70 litres or more per day to stay properly hydrated.
