Did you know? Young horses can develop eruption bumps!

Eruption bumps are firm swellings that appear on the lower jaw (sometimes the upper too) as permanent cheek teeth push through the gums between 2–5 years of age.

They’re a normal part of growth, caused by new teeth erupting and pressing against the jawbone from the inside.

Key points to know:

  • They are usually symmetrical and smooth.
  • Most are harmless and disappear as the teeth finish erupting.
  • They should not be hot, painful, or cause difficulty eating.

When to worry:

  • If the swelling is uneven, painful, or persists beyond 5 years.
  • If there’s discharge, sharp edges, or difficulty chewing.
  • These may signal infection, impacted teeth, or another dental problem.

In most cases, eruption bumps are nothing to fear – just a sign your young horse is growing up. Still, regular dental checks ensure they stay on track and that no abnormal issues are missed.

By combining a fibre-rich diet with attentive care and routine dentistry, you can support healthy development and set your young horse up for a lifetime of comfortable chewing.
